The Single Most Common Epoxy Failure in Ghana

When an epoxy floor blisters, peels or delaminates within months, the instinct is to blame the resin or the installer’s mixing. Almost always, both are innocent. In Ghana’s climate the culprit is beneath the coating, not in it — and it is the same culprit nearly every time: slab moisture that was never tested before the resin went down. Understanding this one mechanism explains the majority of failed floors in the country.

The Physics, Plainly

Ghana sits in persistent 81–83% relative humidity. A concrete slab is not a sealed barrier — moisture vapour rises through it continuously from the ground and the air it absorbed during curing. Seal a resin coating over that slab without addressing the vapour, and the moisture has nowhere to go. It builds osmotic and hydrostatic pressure directly under the coating, and pressure lifts film. The result is the familiar pattern: small blisters first, then larger ones, then peeling and delamination — sometimes within a single rainy season, even under a thick, well-mixed build.

The resin did not fail. The slab was never asked whether it was ready.

The Two Tests That Prevent It

The entire failure is preventable with two standardised measurements taken before any resin is mixed:

If a slab reads high, the answer is not to hope — it is to specify a moisture-tolerant or vapour-suppression primer, or a remediation layer, to the reading. That is the discipline. It is unglamorous, it adds a step, and it is the single thing that separates a floor that lasts fifteen years from one that fails in three.

Why Most Failed Floors Skipped It

Moisture testing takes time and equipment, and it sometimes returns an inconvenient answer that adds cost. A quote that skips it looks cheaper and starts sooner — until the floor blisters and the whole system has to come up and go down again. The skipped test is not a saving; it is a deferred, multiplied cost.

What This Means If Your Floor Is Already Blistering

A recoat will not fix a blistering floor — it traps the moisture and the new coat lifts too. The honest path is to test the slab (ASTM F2170 / F1869), establish why it is reading high, and remediate before rebuilding to the correct ICRI CSP profile.
