A Floor That Has to Pass an Audit

In a food production hall or a pharmaceutical facility, the floor is not décor — it is part of the hygiene system the whole operation is audited against. An inspector reads the floor as a signal of how the facility is run. A seam where bacteria can harbour, a wall-floor junction that traps residue, a surface that pits under cleaning chemicals — each is a finding waiting to happen. What a Hygienic Specification Demands

Seamless and monolithic

A hygienic floor has no joints, grout lines or seams where product residue and bacteria can lodge. The resin is laid as a single continuous surface, so cleaning reaches every part of it.

Coved wall junctions

The most overlooked detail and the most important. Where the floor meets the wall, a square junction traps residue no mop reaches. A hygienic floor turns that junction into a smooth coved upstand, so the floor sweeps continuously up the wall and washes clean. An auditor looks for this first.

Washdown rating

Food and pharma floors are cleaned hard — hot water, pressure, sanitising chemicals, often daily. The system must tolerate that regime without dulling, pitting or breaking down. Polyurethane chemistry is frequently specified here for its thermal-shock tolerance under steam and hot washdown.

Chemical resistance

Cleaning agents, sanitisers, fats, sugars and process chemicals all attack a floor over time. The system is specified to the actual chemical exposure of the facility, not a generic coating.

Food and pharma floors are wet and often greasy, so slip resistance is part of the same specification. The anti-slip class is rated to EN 16165 (R10–R13 by zone) and built into the floor, combining hygiene and grip in one system rather than fighting each other.

And the Slab Decides — Even Here

A hygienic floor is held to the highest finish standard, which makes a slab failure beneath it the most damaging of all — a blistered floor in a GMP facility is a shutdown, not a cosmetic problem. So the discipline is non-negotiable: the slab is tested to ASTM F2170 and ASTM F1869, prepared to the specified ICRI CSP profile, and primed to the reading before any hygienic build goes down. Where the slab needs remediation, that is concrete repair and substrate prep work done first.
